Am 20.1.2021 reichte Benjamin Stora den Bericht Les questions mémorielles portant sur la colonisation et la guerre d’Algérie bei der französischen Staatsregierung ein. Storas Grundlegung ruht u.a. auf autobiographischer Literatur. Er erwähnt die Intellektuelle Hélène Cixous, wie er selbst algerisch-jüdischer Herkunft, bekannt für ihre unklassifizierbaren Texte, und zitiert Nedjma von Kateb Yacine mit Blick auf die Zerrissenheit zwischen der Zeit der Vorfahren und der der Zukunft im Umbruchsprozess der Dekolonisierung. Der Vortrag beschäftigt sich hiervon ausgehend mit Raum-Zeit-Spannungen und affektiven Aufladungen in Werken von Cixous - „Les noms d’Oran“, „Mon Algériance“, Osnabrück - und in Nedjma unter Rückgriff auf die raumsemiotischen Überlegungen von Ismaïl Abdoun in Lecture(s) de Kateb Yacine, zur ancestralité von Naget Khadda und dem Band mit Photographien Tlemcen ou les lieux de l’écriture von Mohammed Dib.

Oran, Alger, Sétif: Spatial semiotics in Hélène Cixous, Kateb Yacine and Mohammed Dib

On 20 January 2021, Benjamin Stora submitted a report titled Les questions mémorielles portant sur la colonisation et la guerre d’Algérie to the French government. Stora’s argument is based on material including autobiographical literature. He mentions the intellectual Hélène Cixous who, like him, is of Algerian-Jewish heritage, and famous for her unclassifiable texts. He cites Kateb Yacine’s Nedjma in order to illustrate conflict between the age of ancestors and future time in the upheaval of decolonization. This lecture thus explores spatial-temporal tensions and affective loads in the works of Cixous (‘Les noms d’Oran’, ‘Mon Algériance’, Osnabrück) and in Yacine's Nedjma with reference to the spatial semiotic ideas of Ismaïl Abdoun in Lecture(s) de Kateb Yacine, Naget Khadda’s concept of ancestralité, and to the volume of photographs Tlemcen ou les lieux de l’écriture by Mohammed Dib.

Isabella von Treskow is professor for French and Italian literature at the University of Regensburg. Her research interests include literature in the context of WWI and WWII and the representation of violence.
